Zhoushan 500kV Internet T&D Project Commenced

The Zhoushan 500kV internet transmission and distribution project commenced on December 28, 2016. The project will set two new world records, that is, the construction of two transmission towers with a height of 380 meters and adoption of domestic 500kV XLPE submarine cables. A steady stream of electric power will fuel the development of Zhoushan Islands District in the near future.

With an investment of ¥4.62bn, the Zhoushan 500kV internet transmission and distribution project was approved by Provincial Development and Reform Commission in May, 2016. Two internet channels will be set up between the city of Ningbo and Zhoushan. The first channel is Ningbo-Zhanshan 500kV internet line transformed from an available 220kV line; the second channel is to construct a new 500kV line, which starts from Ningbo Zhenhai district and ends in Dinghai district. The project is expected to increase a capacity of 3 million kV.A and build 207 kilometers of new overhead lines and 17 kilometers of new submarine cables. The project will be put into operation as planed in 2018.   



There are two main challenges facing the construction of project. One of two challenges is the construction of two transmission towers, which are 380 meters high. To date, the transmission tower world record holders have been two towers with a height of 370 meters located at Big Cat Mountain and Cool Hat Mountain. Each 380 meter high transmission tower will be constructed on Jintang Island and Cezi Island, setting a new record. Another challenge is to lay submarine cables. The 17 kilometer submarine cable will adopt domestic 500kV XLPE cable. This is the world’s first AC 500kV XLPE submarine project independently developed and manufactured by China.

The 500kV internet transmission and distribution project will meet demand for secure and reliable power and improve the power supply capability of the city of Ningbo and Cixi. It will accelerate the change of the growth model and promote sustained and sound economic development of Zhejiang province.
