First Domestic Large Scale UHV DC Clean Power Transmission Project will Start Construction

The first domestic large-scale ±800kV UHV DC clean power transmission line project connecting Jiuquan and Hunan province was approved on May 18th. This project has significant strategic meaning in implementing the national action plan of atmospheric pollution prevention and treatment, optimizing power structure, developing long distance and large capacity power transmission technology, promoting inter-region power consumption and utilization, relieving the pressure of atmospheric pollution prevention and treatment in mid-eastern China.

Main construction work of the Jiuquan-Hunan ±800kV UHV DC power transmission project comprises construction of the ±800kV DC transmission line (starting from the Guazhou county of the city of Jiuquan, covering the Hexi corridor, crossing the four provinces of Gansu, Shanxi, Hubei, Hunan and the Chongqing city, ends in Xiangtan county of Xiangtan city in Hunan province, totally 2383 km in length), and construction of ±800kV converter stations in Jiuquan and Xiangtan city of Hunan province, conversion capacity amounts to 8000,000KW. Rated power transmission capacity of this project is 8000,000 KW, with total investment amount to 26.2 billion RMB. The project is expected to finish construction and put into operation by the end of 2017.

The approval of Jiuquan UHV DC transmission project marks the beginning of a new stage of domestic power development, it helps to greatly promote company investment in wind power and solar power development, mobilize development of strategic new industries represented by new energy equipment manufacturing, propel further development of new energy base alongside Hexi corridor. This project is capable of over 42,000,000,000 KWH power transmission annually when operated at full load after construction is finished, of which 40% is wind and solar energy.
