CSPG to Completely Improve HV Cable Joints by the End of July 2016

The China Southern Power Grid (CSPG) expects to deal with the problem of high voltage cable joint troubling the company many years in the first half of the year 2016. The company has reportedly held a symposium on solutions to eliminating hidden troubles of 220kV cable joints in Guangzhou city, with attendees striving for solutions. According to the plan worked out on the conference, hidden troubles of this kind of line will be eliminated by the end of July, 2016. 


According to the statistics, up to nine breakdowns of 220kV working cable joints have occurred across southern power grid since Feb 2013, which the company pays great attention to. The company organizes relevant research institutes to collect the materials of the same kind product and do some type of statistical analysis. Through detailed analysis of fundamental causes, corresponding maintenance and rectification measures are worked out. The main cause is that a batch of 220kV prefabricated cable joints produced by part of manufacturers have defects. At present, 299 220kV prefabricated cable joints with defects are still operating, involving 17 lines. The company requires organizations to take steps to prevent hidden troubles of the equipment from affecting the personal safety and system operation.     

The Cable joints play an important role in the electrical and electronic systems of any home or industry. They connect the power cables and ensure the flow of continuous electric current through them. Different types of cables are used depending upon their intended application and accordingly the type of cable joints required will differ. The China Southern Power Grid Research Institute will cooperate with the Power Supply Bureaus in Shenzhen, Foshan and Zhuhai to systematically undertake technological research into operation reliability of high voltage cables.
