NDRC: Total Electricity Consumption - a Year-on-Year Increase of 2.7% in the First Half of 2016

HIMALAYAL - SHANGHAI - CHINA

The National Development and Reform Commission made an announcement on July 14, 2016 that the national electricity consumption amounted to about 277,6 billion kW·H in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 2.7%. The growth rose by 1.4% than the same period last year.

However, the electricity consumption in secondary sector still remains depressed, with only up 0.5% year over year and a slump in the consumption of energy-intensive sectors.

Total electricity consumption
As the total electricity consumption increases steadily, the structure upgrades continuously. The quantity of electricity consumed by the tertiary sector and household rises by 9.2% and 7.7% respectively, a year-over-year increase of 1.2% and 2.9%.

Experts show that a rise in quantity of electricity consumption in the first half of 2016 hints that structure adjustment and transformation have taken effect.

Huang Xiaoyong, Head of International Energy Security Research Center, predicts that the electric power consumption will maintain a low growth in 2016 and total electricity consumption increases by 1% to 2% year over year. The China Electricity Council also indicates that the electric power consumption situation of 2016 is expected to be better than that of 2015.
